Everyone should have a will. It is the responsible thing to do because it makes it easier for your family and friends to handle things after you have passed on. It doesn't matter if you have a lot of money or things to leave behind; you should still have a will to make sure that everything is handled the way that you want it to be. There are certain things that wills should include. Not all wills will consist of these things, depending on what is happening in your life. You should also update it regularly, especially as your life changes. So, what are some things that should be in your will?

Identifying Information

The first thing you should include in your will is your basic identifying information. That includes things like your address, birth date, full name, and any other names you have gone by, and the names of your immediate family and any other names they may have gone by. In this case, it doesn't hurt to be as specific as possible. You don't want there to be any confusion as to whose will is being read.

Will Identification

You also need to have some wording stating this is your will. However, you aren't stuck using a particular wording. You just need to have something that states very clearly that this is your will. If this will is updating an older will, you may also want to say something about this will superseding previous wills and list them by date.

Executor

The executor is the person who executes your will. That means they are in charge of ensuring that your wishes are carried out how you want them to be. They will also be in charge of ensuring that any bills for the estate are paid, and everyone gets what they need. The executor can be a family member, a friend, or an attorney; it depends on what you are comfortable with. Just make sure you ask your family member or friend before you name them your executor.

Every person should have a will. Your will ensures that your beneficiaries are taken care of, and your belongings and money are disbursed how you want them to be. It doesn't necessarily have to be a long, complicated document, but there are some things that you should make sure to include in your will.
